The guide
What actually changes the sound and feel of a keyboard? Five things, layer by layer.
Thick-walled keycaps add mass, so each press rings lower and fuller. Thin walls leave more empty space inside the cap, which sounds higher and a little hollow.
Profile height plays along: tall, sculpted profiles like SA tend to sound deeper and louder, while low profiles like Cherry sound crisper and tighter.
PBT is a denser plastic with a slightly textured, matte feel. It usually sounds lower and stays matte over years of typing.
ABS feels smoother and sounds brighter and higher-pitched. It's great for rich colors and crisp legends, and can pick up a gentle shine with heavy use.
Tray mount screws the plate and PCB straight into the case: firm, simple and a touch more ringy. Top mount hangs the plate from the top of the case for a more balanced sound.
Gasket mount floats the plate on soft gaskets, so it sounds softer and feels a little bouncy. Foam between the layers fills empty space and quiets hollow echoes.
A thin, even coat of lube on the stem, housing and spring quiets scratchiness and spring ping. That's the secret behind most creamy-sounding boards.
Linear switches go straight down. Tactile switches add a bump you can feel. Clicky switches add an audible click on top of the bump.
A felt or cloth desk mat soaks up vibration before it reaches a hard desk, trimming the sharp highs and adding a rounder, quieter tone.
It's a small change you can hear straight away, and it makes the whole setup look finished.
